What is MyShake?

MyShake is a free app for Android phones that has the ability to recognize earthquake shaking using the sensors in every smartphone. The app runs “silently” in the background on your phone using very little power – just like the step-tracking fitness apps. When the shaking fits the vibrational profile of an earthquake, the app sends that information to our central system that confirms the location and magnitude of the quake.

Right now, the app only collects the data centrally, but in the future--once any bugs are worked out--it may be able to send notifications to app users warning them when shaking is approaching. In the future, MyShake could contribute to ShakeAlert in the US, and MyShake could provide a warning capability in many earthquake prone places around the world that have no traditional seismic networks.
